Do’s
- Keep your pet on a regular, appropriate professional grooming cycle.
- Maintain regular home brushing, combing, and washing of the coat.
- Regularly remove dead undercoats on Double coated breeds with appropriate tools.
- Keep it as fun as possible and use both verbal and treat-based rewards.
- Make grooming a regular routine. Dogs love routine and we want them to see grooming as an acceptable process.
- Maintain appropriate nail length, including the dew claws (always remembering some of our dogs still have rear dew claws) which are often overlooked, and which can grow into the skin as a result.
- Find a suitable location to groom your pet that is not where you play together or where they sleep. Make it very clear by using the set-up and location that this is work time for the dog.
Don’t’s
- Brush or comb a wet coat.
- Allow anything to enter the dog’s ear canal.
- Leave too many weeks between professional grooming appointments.
- Avoid pulling on the coat when using grooming tools.
- Groom your pet whilst they are resting or asleep.
- Avoid hair dryers blowing into the ear and face as this is scary and uncomfortable.
